Paweł Buszman – professor in cardiology, co-founder, current Chairman of the Board and former Chairman of the Supervisory Board of the American Heart of Poland (AHP).
He graduated with honors from Medical University of Silesia in 1985. He is also a graduate of TRIUM Global Executive MBA program run jointly by NYU Stern School of Business, London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE), and HEC School of Management, Paris.
Professor Buszman is a specialist in cardiology and internal medicine. He got his PhD degree with honors in 1991, and in 2002 at the Medical University of Silesia he obtained Postdoctoral Degree in Medicine (habilitation). In 2009 he was awarded the title of Professor by the President of the Republic of Poland.
He begun his medical career in Zabrze, at the Provincial Cardiology Centre (Wojewódzki Ośrodek Kardiologii) led by professor Stanisław Pasyka and professor Zbigniew Religa at that time. He received further training at the leading cardiology centres in Poland (Warsaw, Zabrze) and abroad (Herzzentrum - Bad Krozingen, Germany, Royal Brompton Hospital - London, United Kingdom, University of Texas Health and Science Center in San Antonio - Texas, USA, Deborah Heart and Lung Center - Browns Mills, USA).
Professor Paweł Buszman was the one to introduce several innovative methods of endovascular treatment, e.g. using stenting and aterectomy in peripheral artery disease (PAD) treatment. He is a pioneer in invasive coronary disease treatment with the use of stents in patients with left main coronary artery stenosis (the LE MANS registry). He co-authored the first strategy of invasive treatment in patients with myocardial infarction in Poland; he developed and implemented the following methods: percutaneous revascularization in postinfarction patients with ischemic cardiomyopathy (the REHEAT registry), carotid artery stenting (the CAPTAS registry), and methods of delivering medication directly to the arterial wall. He also implemented experimental models for the assesment of the reperfusion injury of heart and coronary artery restenosis in the AHP's laboratory in the city of Kostkowice – today's Center for Cardiovascular Research and Development.
He authored more than 100 publications which were published in such journals as Journal of American College of Cardiology, Circulation, The Lancet or The New England Journal of Medicine. He coordinated many international and multi-centre trials and researched dedicated to the treatment of cardiovascular diseases.
Professor Buszman is a member, a former Chairman of the Board (1995-2004) and a former Secretary of the Board (1995-1998) of the Polish Cardiac Society (Polskie Towarzystwo Kardiologiczne – PTK). He co-founded the Interventional Cardiology Section of the Polish Cardiac Society and the Professional Association of the Interventional Cardiologists. He is a fellow of many international societies, including the European Society of Cardiology (FESC), American College of Cardiology (FACC), and The Society of Cardiac Angiography and Interventions (FSCAI).
In 1984, he was awarded the Scholarship and Student Award of Polish Minister of Health. He is also a European Society of Cardiology Training Fellowship Winner (1995). For the series of publications on coronary intervention of the left main trunk, he received the Scientific Award of the Polish Cardiac Society twice, in 1995 and 2009. In 1998 he was awarded by the Polish Ministry of Health for his outstanding medical achievements. He is also a prizewinner of the Jan Wejchert's award of the Polish Business Roundtable in the “Success” cathegory.
Professor Paweł Buszman is married to Zofia Buszman, MD, PhD. His wife is a pediatrician, pulmonologist and alergologist. They have two children, Zuzanna and Piotr. Piotr has also become a doctor.
