Coronary Angioplasty (PTCA or PCI)

Coronary Angioplasty (Coronary Balloon Angioplasty), known as PCI - Percutaneous Coronary Intervention or PTCA - Percutaneous Transluminal Coronary Angioplasty, is a cardiological procedure carried out in order to open clogged (stenosed) coronary (heart) arteries. The artery is opened using a little balloon inserted in the vessel. The procedure is often combined with Stenting which is placing a small mesh tube (stent) inside the artery. Stenting decreases the risk of renarrowing (restenosis).
